Introduction: Here you can download digital representations of famous music pieces, some of them carefully rearranged by me in the past yars. Sound samples of most classical musical instruments are part of the General MIDI (GM) standard, and in contrast to modern (popular) music, classical music is neither based on complex synthesizer effects nor (seldom) on human voice. This makes it relatively easy to record classical music to a MIDI file. Surely, MIDIs should not be compared against an orchestra playing in a concert hall, they can't replace that. MIDI files are abstract, device-independent representations of digital music, just like music sheets and only a few kilobytes (KB) in size.
Tech Note: Native MIDI support is nowadays built into most desktop operating systems and soundcards. In general, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is still the "common language" of many musical instruments, although it is getting on in years. Quality of MIDI playback is strongly hardware-dependent. Always have in mind that the same MIDI sounds slightly different on every device, and that a standard soundcard is not really a high-end synthesizer.
Copyright Issues: Most classical music today is public domain and free to be used by everyone. If you do wish to use the music for any purpose but your own personal use, you should nevertheless contact the author of the MIDI file as he still has the copyright for the sequences he created. Concerning the improvements I made to these files, I don't claim any copyright. Modules: Here you have access to a selection of the best MOD files (modules) I found on the Internet during the last years. Some are really good, at least if you like clean, pure synthesizer music as much as I do! The MOD format came down from the early time of PCs and home computers (sigh). It was invented on the Amiga and was used quite a lot for background sound in games as well as in demos and intros (def.: entertaining software artworks created by the "subculture of computer enthusiasts"; more specifically called "the demoscene").
Tech Note: MOD files (modules) can be compared to MIDI files, with the difference that the sound samples are not stored on the sound device (hardware) but are included in the file itself. This makes them very flexible to use, and the biggest advantage is that they sound the same on every computer, even with very simple soundcards, since they are sampled in real-time by software (software sampling). Another advantage is that they are easy to edit with a MOD tracker (f.ex. the ModPlug Tracker), as the notes and effect information are stored separately from the sound samples in the file.
MOD Players: To play these modules, you need a sound player that can handle the different MOD formats. A simple but good player specialized in playing all existing MOD files is the ModPlug Player. This player has built-in bass expansion, reverb and surround effects as well as an optional noise reduction filter and supports many existing Winamp plugins for visual effects, which makes it my recommendation. Another good player is YAMP (Yet Another Music Player) by André Karwath. This player has many different skins and plays WAV, MID, RMI, MOD, S3M, XM, IT, MPA, MP1, MP2, MP3 and CD music. Unfortunately, its compatibility for the most developed Impulse Tracker (IT) format is very moderate. Both players mentioned are freeware, and last but not least, the popular Winamp player should also do the job.
